THE JOURNEY BEGINS: Acts 1 and 2:1-41

I. INTRO: The Book of Acts
1. The book of Acts was written by Luke, a doctor and a Gentile. Acts is a sequel to Luke’s Gospel.
2. The book is written to Theophilus, a name meaning “one who loves God.” Was Theophilus an individual or a symbolic name for all who love God? Was he a patron (major donor!) who financed Luke’s writing? Was he a Roman acquaintance who was interested to learn more about this new Christian faith? Those are all possibilities.
3. Luke probably wrote the book of Acts sometime between 63 and 70 AD, just 30-40 years after Jesus walked this earth.
4. Part 1 (Chapters 1-12) talk about the establishment and expansion of the Church and the ministry of Peter,
5. Part 2 (Chapters 13-28) is about the conversion and missionary journeys of Paul.
6. Acts 29 – and this is a shameless plug – a TV show produced by CBN Siam (also the ongoing story of the Church through the ages!)

Fasting [Psalm 77 & 1 Corinthians 9:24-27] by Pastor Rupert Abbott.

#4 in Lent series based on our CMCC jointly written Lent Devotional.

When I read through the 1^st draft I was struck by the strong message for us from this week’s contributions! We have been challenged; given a challenge that requires a response! Note that 4 ½ out of 7 of the writers are from the East! (Paul Utley has lived here for 35 years = 1/2 !) Fasting does not fit easily in individualistic Western societies where the feel good factor dictates how we live, and our individualistic outlook on life can so easily pervade our Christian lives too; in our international church it is good for us with a Western mindset to be challenged by those who are heart and soul Eastern; to see our Christian life in a corporate dimension, and to be willing to embrace spiritual disciplines which are just that – discipline!

Prayer for Life from the Good Shepherd : John 10:1-21 by Easther Wakeman

I work at Payap University overseeing our chapel with a small staff of Christians who try to share the good news of God’s love with our mostly Buddhist staff and students in a variety of ways– through cell groups, clubs, worship, work camps, parties, and so on. This week something happened at work that deeply disappointed me. The next morning I was talking it over with Rob and Jesus during our morning prayers and I was totally focused on the foibles and weaknesses of my staff, and I burst out in my frustration, “they are all a bunch of bozos! My staff is a bunch of bozos!” (For those not familiar with this term, bozos means clowns—foolish, weak, incompetents!)
